Kim's Story

Kim is a GTM leader with depth of experience across Sales, Marketing, and Revenue.

She's made her mark at a number of late stage B2B SaaS companies, and she knew she didn't want to end up at any old company for her next job. Or worse, taking a step back in her career.

VP of Business Development

CASE STUDY

– KIM, VP Business Development

“I'm pretty confident if we hadn't started working together, I was gonna have to quickly go for a lower tier role that I didn't really want because I didn't know how to land a job. Not only did I get better prepared to look for the right job, but then I think the emotional support and encouragement from you has been invaluable.”

"The emotional support and encouragement from you has been invaluable.”

Finding Her Inevitable Edge:

Kim’s career was rich with a blend of sales development, GTM, ABM, and revops experience. She’d also led relatively large teams and developed a number of sales programs from scratch in highly complex SaaS environments.

More than anything, her story needed some focus and some editing so that it was clear she was the exact fit for every role she pursued.

The Challenges:

Kim had been searching for 2 months on her own before she reached out to me.

She’d had a handful of interviews through her network, but those opportunities were starting to run dry and she hadn’t landed a single one through cold applications. She assumed applying for jobs just didn’t work at the VP level.

Breaking Through Cold Applications

Redefining Her Goal

001.

002.

Kim had great referrals, but they weren’t always for the jobs she was most excited about, and they were starting to run dry.

When I took a look at her resume, it was clear why. She had previously subscribed to the notion that resumes should be one page, and they should be high level.

We completely overhauled her resume, focusing on sharing specific, tangible details on how she got the amazing results she did for her teams.

Kim went from zero interviews from applications to multiple interviews in exactly 2 weeks from her first applications with the new resume

Whenever I work with a client, we don’t just talk about this role. We’ve all got a vision for where we want to be (even if it doesn’t exactly answer “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”) But Kim does have a vision. Her eventual path is the C-suite.

So when we looked at her Market-Value Fit and developed her targeting strategy, we kept this piece in mind. What experience would she need to add to her resume for C-level consideration down the line? Her background spanned Sales and Marketing. Would she have a stronger case for CMO or CRO?

While we did initially define 3 profiles of roles she could fit, it became quickly apparently that one would not only be her strongest chance for landing the offer, but for upward mobility and the opportunity to move to the C-level in a shorter period of time.

Strategic Moves:

"I could very clearly define what my message was and my value, and that was getting me positive feedback from people because it was so clearly articulated. Because we had so clearly articulated it on the back end.”

2 Offers in one week:

The Journey:

“That felt great. It felt like the time and the effort to find the right thing was worth it. I'm valuable, and people in the market see that. And a lot of it is, like, at the right time, the right company, the right roles, you know, and, like, putting the right energy out there and the right work at the same time and the momentum.”

Ultimately, Kim landed not just one offer, but 2 offers in one week.

I won’t say it was all sunshine and rainbows. For Kim, there were moments of frustration and moments of imposter syndrome. (This happens to all my clients at some point in the process.) But she pushed through, and she let those moments motivate her to step up.

Ultimately, Kim landed not just one offer, but 2 offers in one week.
